Michael Sands

PIC#1 TIFI work with clients using a practical-problem-solving approach based on cognitive-behavioral principles. As a short-term, goal-oriented therapist, I usually see clients between three and six months, longer or shorter depending on the complexity and severity of their concerns. During the first session, we would explore your particular concerns, establish some provisional goals and determine whether your needs and my style are a good match. I tend to be most effective with clients who play an active role in their treatment: coming to sessions having thought about what they want to address; and having worked on issues between sessions which may involve things like stress reduction techniques, mood-tracking, or reading a self-help book. Based on two decades of experience as a therapist in private practice, I’ve found that if a client and I are working well together, one can expect to see some initial improvement within a few weeks. As I see it, the goal of an effective therapy is to help clients fully understand the dynamics of a particular problem so they can have a greater degree of constructive control over their lives.
